Limber

Limb gives us limber

sure as God the little lamb,

sure as the tree holds out the branch

and poetry the steady iamb.

I wonder if I could again

be limber as a simile,

light the lamp Apollo knew,

buzz lively as a bee.

I wandered lonely as a cloud.

I wounded anywhere I could.

I wondered am I alone aloud.

I did what any poet would.

I had one or two more poems to raid

and miles to go before I sleep

When snatch’d from all effectual aid

Have I no promises left to keep?

Night and

Night and

my right

hand reaches

for the left

gently to coax to rest

at my side

else it slow

ly climb

across my

middle toward

s my chest.

It is a nightly

ritual. A blessing

at best.

Morning finds

my left hand

clenched

in a fist. You

write the rest.
